The Dark Enquiry by Deanna Raybourn

I received a galley of this novel from NetGalley for review. This in no way affected my opinions.

Another winner!

Julia and Brisbane have settled in London after their honeymoon. However, unsurprisingly, there is no marriage normalcy in sight. Brisbane is still as secretive as ever, and Julia sets out to find out why he is keeping certain secrets from her, especially when she knows it concerns her family. This leads her to the Spirit Club, were séances are held.

Of course, Brisbane immediately finds her out. Seriously, nothing gets by this guy. And Julia and Brisbane unexpectedly find themselves witnesses to someone's unfortunate death. Interestingly enough, the death is ruled an accident, but Julia and Brisbane aren't so sure.

Their marriage is tested when Julia oversteps her bounds and she finds herself that subject of newspaper gossip. Tension arise between her and Brisbane as the investigation unfolds, and Julia wonders if their marriage will endure.

I found the investigation very intriguing. The suspects were characters with a variety of different personalities and positions in society.

However, what I found the most enjoyable was watching Julia and Brisbane's relationship. I was so relieved while reading the last book to find out they were not going to have a fairytale marriage and work together during investigations in perfect harmony. I would have been very disappointed if that happened.

The scenes in this book between the two of them, especially towards the end, were very intense. More about Brisbane and his past were revealed, but I'm still happy to report, that even after five books, there is still more mysteries surrounding him left to be revealed.

The Dark Enquiry ended on a little bit of a cliffhanger, albeit not much. We just find out where they're headed to next. I can't wait!

Yay! So glad the series is staying strong....I'm hoping to pick this up at the literacy signing in NY next week. I'm hoping Deanna Raybourn will still be there as she had a bad scare with her husband's health recently.
