The House of Mirth by Edith Wharton. Sad, sad, depressing book. No bright light anywhere. I had to read a Georgette Heyer after reading this to brighten up my spirits!
Yes, absolutely no mirth in it! I tried reading this one in high school and never got through it. It turned me off Edith Wharton for decades! Finally read "The Age of Innocence" this year and realized what a wonderful writer she was. Such a different book!
Just a note to let you know I think your blog is great, and I've given you an award on my blog. :o) You can learn about it here: http://giveawayroundup.blogspot.com/2009/09/i-got-super-scibbler-award.html
I haven't read it but I wanted to. I read THE AGE OF INNOCENCE not long ago and loved it. A bit sad but wonderful. I want to read more by E. Wharton. I usually love moving, touching stories very much. Much more than comedies. Maybe there's something wrong with me... I love crying!
