Jane Eyre (2006)

As part of the All About the Brontës Challenge, I chose to re-watch the 2006 adaptation of Jane Eyre. I found this to be a good excuse, since I haven't watched it in a few years.

It was a great reminder of how much I loved it and reminds me that I really need to reread the novel, since I can't even remember the last time I did. Just too many books and too little time!

I was once again fascinated by Toby Stephens' portrayal of Edward Rochester. I had seen him in a few other things and am just astounded that it is the same person. Goes to show how brilliant an actor he is.

The series captured the great dark, Gothic look that the novel gave up. Everything about this series was perfect - from the locations to the costumes to the acting and casting. I have to remember not to let years go by in between viewings again.

None of this are profound thoughts, I know. I just wanted to get out how amazed I still am by this production and it is amongst my favorite period dramas.

Hello, Christy -- I enjoyed this version of Jane Eyre, too; I felt it didn't dwell too much on the anguish of her childhood and the horrors of Lowood School, and focused more on the relationship of Jane and Rochester. Very enjoyable.

I just watched another version of Jane Eyre today (I believe it was l980's BBC version) and it was superb and followed the book verbatim. Purists of Jane Eyre would probably prefer this version.

I simply loved this version and bought the DVD as soon as I could. I watched it when it was first on TV. Although this Rochester was much more handsome than in the book, I certainly didn't mind! I re-read Jane Eyre soon after watching this, for I had read it as a teenager and loved it all over again.

This is one of my favourite adaptations ever. Toby Stephens is a powerful Mr Rochester and young Ruth Wilson was a convincing Jane. I'm not a purist but I love Charlotte's Jane Eyre. I don't think this version disrepect the spirit of the original writer and is one of the many BBC great pieces of costume drama. Thanks for sharing.
